Marcus Hall, the new CEO of Netgroup Energy, sees a holistic approach to energy and long-term customer relationships as the keys to the future—and a Netgroup Energy that wants to play a greater role in a world where energy is becoming increasingly important.
The energy industry is facing one of its biggest transformations in decades. Electrification, increased sustainability requirements, and growing energy needs are driving new investments—while demands for stability and resilience are becoming ever greater.
For Marcus Hall, the new CEO of Netgroup Energy, the future is about expanding the business and playing a larger role in the overall energy system.
– So much is happening. Energy and energy supply are the foundation of our entire way of life and are incredibly important for the future. We know firsthand what it’s like when something doesn’t work, whether it’s electricity distribution or district heating distribution.
Netgroup Energy is currently a network organization comprising specialized companies in the energy sector. Marcus Hall describes a company with strong expertise in several areas, but also with significant opportunities for growth.
– We can expand our portfolio; I’m absolutely convinced of that. We already have a broad portfolio, but there’s potential for even more projects with our existing customers, while also increasing our presence in related industries, such as process and research facilities.
Nuclear Power Remains Central
Nuclear power is an area where Netgroup Energy already has a strong position. At the same time, Marcus Hall emphasizes that developments in this field are largely driven by political decisions.
– We have extensive experience with nuclear power, and we have a lot to contribute in that area. However, how nuclear power in Sweden will develop in the future depends largely on political decisions.
At the same time, he sees great opportunities for Netgroup Energy to play a role in future initiatives specifically related to nuclear power.
– We can help by simplifying the planning process for future nuclear power, both in terms of political decisions and the companies that will invest in it. We’re talking about enormous investments.
A mix of energy sources is important
Marcus Hall repeatedly emphasizes the importance of combining different types of energy production while expanding storage capacity. He views the circular economy as one of the most important issues moving forward.
– What we always come back to is the circular economy and how to achieve it.
Marcus believes that the energy system of the future will not be dominated by a single energy source but will instead consist of several different types of energy.
– I believe in a combination of different energy sources. We can have wind power, hydroelectric power, and solar power, but of course, from a Swedish perspective, nuclear power as well.
At the same time, he believes that energy storage will become increasingly important as the share of weather-dependent energy sources rises.
– That’s where storage comes into play—with pumped-storage power plants, battery storage, and the technologies that will be developed. We certainly don’t know all of them today.
Long-term customer relationships
With extensive experience in the consulting industry, Marcus Hall brings a clear focus on the long term to his role as CEO.
– Sales are an important part of what we do. But above all, it’s about maintaining and developing the strong customer relationships we have. We’re big believers in a long-term approach. In practice, we don’t do “one-offs”; instead, we work on long-term projects. The energy sector is long-term—for the most part, anyway.
Marcus Hall considers Netgroup Energy to have a strong reputation.
– My impression, during my still brief tenure as CEO, is that we have a very good reputation. We see that many of the people we work with have been our customers for a long time.
AI Drives Energy Demand
One issue that Marcus Hall believes will become increasingly important is AI and the rapidly expanding data centers.
– One important aspect of AI is that it consumes an incredible amount of energy. When it comes to the largest data centers, we’re talking about gigawatts—which is equivalent to an entire nuclear reactor!
He points out that this trend is already influencing how large technology companies plan their energy supply.
– Major U.S. data center operators, such as Microsoft and others, are currently investing in their own energy production.
Grow with More Partners
Looking ahead a few years, Marcus Hall envisions a larger Netgroup Energy with more member companies and a broader range of expertise.
– In a few years, we’ll have an even broader portfolio, which indirectly means we’ll have more partners contributing to Netgroup Energy’s portfolio of expertise.
In closing, Marcus explains that, for him, the energy industry is so much more than just technology and business.
– What I find so exciting about this industry is that it’s so incredibly important to society.
